See & Do

Hokitika Beach

Hokitika is the only town centre on the West Coast located by the beach. And what a beach it is! Rough, strewn with driftwood and boasting beautiful sunsets and views.

Views, Pounamu, Sunsets & Art

  • By day you can walk along admiring its beauty, with awesome views of New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki / Mt Cook.
  • The kids love scouring the sand for pounamu (NZ jade), washed down from nearby rivers or being surprised by a seal basking in the sun.
  • Even the most amateur of photographers is likely to get that perfect sunset shot. Watch the sun sink into the Tasman Sea.
  • It is a source of inspiration for our artists too. Photographers, painters, sculptures, metal artists and glass blowers all reflect the beach in their work.
  • Every year in January the annual Driftwood and Sand Beach Sculpture Festival encourages artists to build sculptures from what they can find on the beach. They are visible for weeks until the tides once again reclaim them.
  • Check out our awesome sunsets at Hokitika Sunset Photos Facebook page.

See & Do

West Coast Whitebait Season

Date : 1 Sept to 14 Nov 2017 inclusive
LOCATION : Hokitika Beach

Every spring on the West Coast the spawning native trout rush from the ocean back into the West Coast river systems. They are met by throngs of people who stand ready to catch as many ‘shoals’ as possible over the two months of the whitebait season. You can walk along the river banks close to the ocean and discover for yourself what the whitebait means to the local residents. It’s a little like gold fever when the whitebait is "running". Get a taste for it yourself at the many cafes in town.

Sand Dunes Classic Golf Event

Date : In Jan every year. 2018 dates to be confirmed
LOCATION : Hokitika Beach

For over 25 years, teams have gotten their best golf clubs out to test their skills along the Hokitika Beach. Often in fancy dress, teams are tested with many sand traps, variable weather and an occassional exciting crossing of the Hokitika River mouth. Prizes and BBQ are the reward at the end of this unique golf event.

The sculpture competition is judged at the end of the festival week and the sculptures are left for all to enjoy until the sea reclaims them.
