Only an hour's drive from Hokitika, Arthur's Pass National Park is in the heart of the Southern Alps. It has an incredible diversity of flora and landscape with an interesting marriage of the beech clad hills and tussock valleys of the east with the luxuriant rain forest of the west. And you can't miss the resident kea there either!
Getting to Hokitika via Arthur's Pass
Travelling from Christchurch to Hokitika via Highway 73 runs through Arthur's Pass National Park. It is incredibly scenic and only takes 3 1/2 hours but we suggest you take your time and enjoy the ride. The Otira Gorge viaduct is an engineering marvel and there are many photo stops along the way.
Coming from Hokitika, it is only an hour's drive.
The famous Tranz Alpine Rail Journey also stops in Arthur's Pass. It has been rated one of the top 10 train journeys in the world so is a must do.
Arthur's Pass Village
Arthur's Pass is an alpine village. The highest mountains have glaciers and surrounding them are tussock basins, flowering herbs and alpine grasses. It has basic services including gas, food and essential items.
Arthur's Pass Activities
There is a multitude of activities including hiking, tramping, skiing, hunting and fishing in the township and surrounding areas. It makes for a great day trip from Hokitika.
