Wanaka is not as far as you would think from Hokitika. Just a 5 hour or so straight shot (not by kayak by the way). But there are many places to visit along the way so its great as a multi day trip up or down the West Coast of the Southern Alps, New Zealand. Why go there? Here's what Lake Wanaka Tourism says...
"Lake Wanaka offers the freedom to do your own thing, away from the crowds, with breath-taking lakes and mountains as your playground.
Lake Wanaka is a year-round destination set against the pristine alpine backdrop of Mount Aspiring National Park. The crystal clear waters of our lakes and rivers, the fresh mountain air, the stunning alpine views at each turn – as a community we’re passionate about the spectacular place we live in. We are committed to preserving its unspoiled and vibrant beauty for generations to come so they have the freedom to explore, just as you do.
There’s no shortage of activities for all ages on land, water or in the air. With a multitude of activities from scenic flights, hiking, skiing, rock climbing, kayaking, skydiving to mountain biking, outdoor enthusiasts are spoilt for choice."
Yup, and Coasters like Wanaka a lot too...
